DENTON (9/8/02) - Junior forward Marilyn Marin became the all-time leading goal scorer in North Texas history with three goals in the Mean Green’s 6-1 win over Texas Woman’s University. Marin notched her sixth career hat trick and now has 46 career goals, moving her past the former record holder Christy Johnson who had 45. With the win North Texas (4-0) also matches their best start in school history since 1996.
"We came out a little slow, but we got things going in the second half," said North Texas Head Coach John Hedlund. "Marilyn’s a tremendous player and when she wants to score she will. It’s a real tribute to her ability for her to break the record".
There was no scoring in the first half, but North Texas came out with fire in the second half scoring the first three goals in a span of 13 minutes. Freshman Michelle Partain started the scoring off with her third goal of the year. Marin followed up Partain with two unassisted goals to make it 3-0 North Texas. TWU’s lone goal of the game came in the 71st minute from Stephanie Richardson to cut the Mean Green lead to 3-1. However Marin extended the lead to 4-1, and broke the school record when she buried a free kick from 25 yards out in the top right side of the net. Jessica Hennessey and Alyssa Carrier added late goals for North Texas to close out the scoring.
The Mean Green out shot TWU 26-10 and goalkeeper Erin Johnson picked up her first win of her career after making two saves in the second half. North Texas heads out on the road for the first time this season Friday night, September 13 at Houston.
