Mean Green Lose Close Contest To Cornhuskers

LINCOLN, Neb. (9/8/06) In a tightly played match, the North Texas women’s soccer team fell for the first time this season as Nebraska hung onto pick up a 3-2 win in the first game of the Nebraska Adidas Invitational.

The Cornhuskers (2-0-2), picked to finish second the Big 12 preseason poll, needed a hat trick from senior Brittany Timko to hold off a pesky Mean Green (2-1-1) squad.

“I was proud of the way that we played today. We were able to go toe-to-toe with a Big 12 team and we did it on the road,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “I was very pleased with our play in the second half and the fact that we were able to out-shoot them 9-5”.

Nebraska jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Timko scored in the 4th minute of play on a corner kick. The Cornhuskers made it 2-0 in the 20th minute of play in the first half when Timko notched her second goal of the game off a rebound.

That’s when the Mean Green responded three minutes later as sophomore Kelli Lunsford picked up her first goal of the season to cut the Nebraska lead to 2-1.

The Cornhuskers took a 2-1 lead into the break after outshooting North Texas 10-4 in the first half.

North Texas was able to control the second half and got the game-tying goal from junior Heather Hutyra in the 60th minute of play. With the match even at 2-2, Timko capped her day off with the game-winning goal in the 64th minute of play.

North Texas out-shot the Cornhuskers 9-5 in the second half as six different Mean Green players had shots in the contest.

North Texas will play its final game of the Nebraska Adidas Invitational Sunday morning at 11 a.m. against No. 17 USC.
