DENTON (9/7/05) - The North Texas soccer and volleyball teams are back in action at home on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and this weekend. The soccer team looks to continue its winning ways against Grambling State, while the volleyball squad looks for its first win of the season against Tulsa. Both matches start at 7 pm.
The volleyball team continues its homestand with the Mean Green Classic this weekend on Friday and Saturday at the Snake Pit. North Texas hosts Wyoming, Prairie View and Centenary. Freshman Rachel Raley and sophomore Katy Prokof had season highs with 18 and 16 kills in the loss against McNeese State last weekend.
The soccer match against Grambling State marks the beginning of a four-game homestand for North Texas. The Mean Green has won two straight games and have won 38 of their past 43 home games dating back to 2000. North Texas is unbeaten in its last five games at home. North Texas won the only meeting between the two teams in 2003, 7-0.
After facing the Tigers, North Texas will battle Missouri State on Friday night at 7 pm. The Bears defeated the Mean Green last season 1-0 and lead the series 2-0. Missouri State has already defeated two Sun Belt conference opponents, with a 2-1 win over Arkansas State and a 4-0 win over UALR. Wrapping up the weekend will be a visit by Sam Houston State on Sunday at 1 pm. The Bearkats, in only their second season, lost 1-0 to North Texas last season in Huntsville.
Sophomore forward Heather Hutyra is the 12th different player to record a hat trick in North Texas history. Hutyra’s hat trick in the win against SMU was the first of her career. Hutyra has been on a tear in the last two games with four goals, eight points, and 13 shots. The three goals also gives the Mean Green at least one hat trick this season, which it is had every year since the program started except 1999.
