HUNTSVILLE (9/3/04) - The North Texas women's soccer team remained perfect on the season with a 1-0 shutout of Sam Houston State to improve to 2-0 on the season. Senior defender Caree Ridenour provided North Texas with its only goal of the night off a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Ridenour, who came into the year with only one career goal in three seasons, now has two goals in the first two games of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made three saves on the night to pick up her first shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. The Mean Green dominated play for most of the night outshooting the Bearkats (1-2) 23-6 in what was a very physical game. There were a total of 34 fouls and five yellow cards handed out on the evening.
"It was a physical game tonight but I think we were able to adjust and we responded when we needed to," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Caree was able to convert on a big penalty shot for us and its always good when you can win on the road".
Freshman Heather Hutyra led North Texas with six shots on goal. Senior Alyssa Carrier and sophomore Jamie Yates both had four shots on goal for the night.
North Texas has now started the year 2-0 for the first time since the 2002 season and has only allowed one goal in the first two games of the year. The Mean Green return to action on Sunday, September 5 at home against Texas Woman's University at 1 p.m.
