DENTON, Tex. (9/2/07) With the game on the line and tied late in the match, sophomore Kendall Juett took control. Juett scored two goals in the final seven minutes to break open a 2-2 tie against UTEP to power the Mean Green (2-0) to a 4-3 victory at the North Texas Soccer Field.
"This was a very good win early in the season, UTEP is a solid team picked fourth to finish in CUSA and one of the better teams in the region" said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.
After letting a 2-0 lead slip away in the second half, North Texas was back on its heels in the final ten minutes against the Miners. That’s when Juett came to the rescue. Just two minutes later Brittney Cleveland found Janaye Woods on the outside for a break. Woods got around the UTEP defender and fed the ball across to Juett for a deflection in for her second goal of the game.
UTEP did not go away quietly however as Tameka Sumter cut the Mean Green lead to 4-3 with 87 seconds left off a header. North Texas held off one final UTEP rally to win in a clash of regional powers.
North Texas scored to first half goals, the first coming from Cleveland off a corner kick from Juett. The second goal was put home by Woods, the first of her career, on a loose ball in the UTEP box. The Miners tied the game up in the second half with two goals in 13 minutes until Juett was able to put the game away for North Texas.
Juett finished the day with five points while Woods and Cleveland both had three.
