DENTON, Texas (8/28/08) On the verge of his 14th season opener, North Texas head soccer coach John Hedlund has been stressing how everything is set up perfectly for the 2008 season. Twelve of the team’s 19 regular season games are at home and more importantly North Texas will be hosting the Sun Belt Tournament for the first time in school history. Add these factors along with Kendall Juett being named Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year and a promising freshman class and this team has the looks of one that will give Denver a run for their money for the conference championship.
“We feel like this is a big year for us,” Hedlund said at his weekly luncheon on Tuesday. “This season everything is kind of setup for us to make a run. Our goal is three out of five. We’re trying to become the only team in our conference that can say we’ve won conference three out of five seasons. That would put us ahead of everyone.”
This weekend the Mean Green hosts two opponents whom they have never faced. The Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters pay a visit to North Texas for the season opener this Friday at 7 p.m. while Xavier will take on the Mean Green on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Louisiana Tech struggled mightily last season and they return a young and upcoming team in 2008. Only five seniors return while they try and incorporate 17 newcomers. Xavier had a tough go of times as well last season, going 4-14-1. Melissa Zimmerman returns as the team’s leading scorer in both goals (7) and points (16) in 2007. The Musketeers are coached by Alvin Alexander who attended Midwestern State with Hedlund. Also making an appearance at the Xavier game will be Scrappy, the Mean Green Mascot, who will be available for pictures with kiddos.
Since the 2000 season, the Mean Green has been nearly perfect in defending its home turf. During that span they have compiled a record of 62-4-5 and have had two winning streaks of at least 23 games. They are also 8-5 in their season openers and have won five of their past six season openers at home. North Texas has outscored its opponents 52-7 in home openers in 13 seasons.
