Cleveland Provides Lone Goal In Exhibition

DENTON, Texas (8/23/08)  With a week left before the regular season opener against Louisiana Tech, the Mean Green donned their new jerseys in the Green and White scrimmage Saturday evening. Senior midfielder Brittany Cleveland scored the game’s lone goal in the 84th minute, giving the White team the 1-0 victory.

The White team, which was made of mostly veteran players, outshot the Green squad 12-6. Both Mandy Hall (White) and Jillian Wright (Green) had four saves a piece.

The game was very much a defensive affair, with both teams keeping each other away from the net and limiting scoring opportunities. Perhaps the biggest area that stood out was the amount of depth that Coach Hedlund and the rest of the Mean Green will have starting next weekend.

“I was really pleased with the amount of quality players we have and the depth we should be able to present this season,” Hedlund said. “For the most part of the game the two teams looked even.”

Next up for the Mean Green will be the regular season opener Friday, August 29 when they host Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. North Texas will look to continue their home dominance, losing only four games in the past five seasons.

“We’re excited,” Hedlund said. “We’re very young and it’s kind of hard right now to tell how everything is going to shape up. We need to work on our offense a little more and put some pressure on the defense. But I think this is one of the deepest teams we’ve had in a few years.”
