The Mean Green kicks off its 21st season with a pair of matches this weekend. North Texas is competing in the Las Vegas Invitational on the campus of UNLV. Under the helm of John Hedlund, Mean Green soccer has established a strong winning tradition. The team has recorded 20 consecutive winning seasons and won nine conference championships. North Texas brings back a majority of its team from last year's record-breaking season.
The 2014 team tied a program record with 16 wins, set a single-season record with 14 shutouts and claimed its ninth conference championship with the regular-season title.
North Texas is opening its season in Las Vegas for the first time in school history and is facing Southern Utah and UNLV for the first time. The Mean Green is opening its season on the road for the third time in the last four years.
This is only the fourth time in program history that the Mean Green is opening its season outside the state of Texas. The distance between Denton, TX and Las Vegas, NV is 1,179 miles, which is the farthest that North Texas has ever traveled for a season-opening game.
North Texas is 13-5-1 in season-opening games. The Mean Green is 8-0-1 in its last nine season-opening games. North Texas has not lost a season-opening game since a 2-0 loss to Eastern Illinois in 2005.
