DENTON, Texas (9/15/09) - A header off a corner kick by TCU's Nikki Wilbur in the 71st minute proved to be the difference in North Texas' exhibition opener against the Horned Frogs as the Mean Green fell 1-0 Saturday evening at the North Texas Soccer Field.
Despite having only three full practices under their belt and while incorporating 10 newcomers to the fold, North Texas managed to hang in with a TCU team that reported to camp August 5 and already played a prior exhibition game against Baylor.
"Not bad for our first scrimmage, considering we have only had a few practices under our belt and TCU was able to start a week ahead of us," North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We had some great chances in front of their goal, but like Mandy (Hall) tonight, their keeper played outstanding as well. The good thing is I was able to play 20 players from my roster tonight, against a strong TCU team, so all the depth we have is very encouraging heading into the season."
TCU's offense was very aggressive throughout the evening and outshot the Mean Green 17-7 and committed 11 more fouls (18-7).
Two of those Mean Green shots came from freshman forward Michelle Young, including a shot on goal with 2:50 left in the game that was saved by TCU's Kelsey Walters. Senior midfielder Kelli Lunsford also had two shots.
North Texas junior goalkeeper Mandy Hall made a couple spectacular saves while totaling five on the night. One of which came towards the end of the first half when TCU's Jordan Calhoun was one-on-one in the open field and Hall lunged to her left to make a one-handed swat of the shot.
The Mean Green will be back in action Friday, August 22 at 6 p.m. at the North Texas Soccer Field when they take part in the annual alumni game.
