Hedlund Signs Five Recruits To Join Soccer Program

DENTON (3/22/04)- North Texas women’s soccer head coach John Hedlund has announced the signing of five players to national letters of intent for this coming fall season. The class includes forward Heather Hutyra, midfielder Danielle Slavonic, goalkeeper Kandice Ellis, defender Lauren Weller, and forward Jamie Yates. All five will join the Mean Green for the 2004 season.

"This class is more about quality than quantity. I’m very excited about this strong group of players coming in for next fall," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "All five players have tremendous potential and the ability to make an immediate impact to this successful program".

Heather Hutyra, Forward, Fort Worth , Texas (Western Hills H.S.)
Hutyra was the 2002 and 2003 District 7-4A Offensive MVP and was named to the first team all-area in 2003. She is a three-time first team all-district selection and was named the 2001 7-4A Freshman of the Year. "Heather is a true forward that has the speed, size, and ability to score goals. She will be a huge success in our system and a great offensive weapon for the next four year" Hedlund said.

Danielle Slavonic, Midfielder/Forward, Carrollton , Texas (Creekview H.S.)
In 2003 Slavonic was named the 8-5A Midfielder MVP and selected to the first-team all-district. In 2002 she was named the 6-5A CO-MVP and led her team in scoring. In 2001 she earned second-team all-district and was second on the team in goals. "Danielle is a very creative offensive minded player that will also do the dirty work in the midfield. She has great vision, change of place and the passion to be an outstanding center-mid at the collegiate level" Hedlund said.

Kandice Ellis, Goalkeeper, Flower Mound, Texas (Flower Mound H.S.)
Ellis was a four-year letter winner and was named to the second-team all-district for two years. "Kandice has the size, strength, and athletic ability to be a top notch goalkepper at the Division I level. She is extremely athletics and her knowledge and experience in goal will be a huge factor in her success at North Texas .

Lauren Weller, Defender/Midfielder, Rockwall , Texas , (Rockwall H.S.)
She is a three-time all-district selection with 48 goals and 24 assists in her high school career. Weller was named to the 9-5A second-team all-district her senior season as she scored 18 goals and added six assists. In 2002 Weller was named to the first-team all district with 20 goals and 10 assists. As a sophomore Weller scored 10 goals and had eight assists and was named to the second-team all district. "Lauren brings a physical presence to an already strong defense. Along with being physical, Lauren is outstanding in the air, can strike a ball extremely well with both feet and can attack out of the back" said Hedlund.

Jamie Yates, Forward, Duncanville, Texas ( University of Dayton )
Yates is a transfer from the University of Dayton . She started 12 goals las season and scored six goals and had 13 points. Yates also had one game-winning goal. In high school Yates scored 23 goals and had 16 assists and was named the District’s MVP. She also broke the school’s career assist record with 52. "Jamie comes in with a year of experience at the Division I level along with an NCAA tournament appearance. She is a true forward with a lot of grit. Jamie is extremely aggressive and she has the mindset of going to the goal" said Hedlund
