DENTON, Texas (6/16/09) The University of North Texas has announced its 2009 soccer schedule, which will welcome the likes of TCU, New Mexico State, Texas Tech and Baylor to the Mean Green Soccer Field.
North Texas will also travel to SMU, Ohio State and Xavier in the early part of the season. In all, North Texas will have 10 home games and 10 road games, including a season-long five game road trip to end the regular season.
“The schedule will be very challenging with a handful of teams most likely ranked in their respected region when the preseason polls come out,” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “When you have a fall roster of 26 and 20 of those players are underclassmen, for me the best way to get this young group of players ready for conference play is to schedule strong programs right from the start.”
North Texas opens the season with six of their first seven contests at home, including TCU on August 15 to kickoff the season. The last time the two teams met goes back to 1996 when the Horn Frogs defeated the Mean Green 3-2 in overtime in Denton. The Mean Green then host in-state counterpart Sam Houston State on August 28, followed by their first ever meeting with New Mexico State on August 30.
After a quick trip across town to SMU on September 4, the Mean Green will start another three game home-stand against Big 12 opponents Texas Tech (September 6) and Baylor (September 11), followed up with Prairie View A&M on September 12. Last season North Texas played Texas Tech to a 0-0 tie in an exhibition in Lubbock and defeated Baylor 2-0 in Waco.
North Texas will then play two non-conference road games against Ohio State on Sept. 18 and Xavier two days later. The Mean Green open Sun Belt conference play with home contests against Louisiana-Lafayette on September 25 and ULM on September 27.
The Mean Green will close out the 2009 regular season by playing seven of their last nine conference games on the road, including a tough three game stretch against Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky and defending SBC champions Denver.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be hosted by FAU November 4-7.
Last season marked the sixth consecutive year that the Mean Green won 15 or more games. While last season’s team had more of a balance with youth and experience, the 2009 squad will feature only three seniors in Kendall Juett, Kelli Lunsford and Lauren Shockey.
“The success of the program over the years has been not about rebuilding but being able to reload with talented players each year,” Hedlund said. “I really feel we have done that for this year’s team.“
