Defending Champions Release 2018 Schedule

June 6, 2018

DENTON — The defending Conference USA Tournament champion and overall 13-time conference champion North Texas soccer team and its head coach John Hedlund have released the 2018 schedule, which begins on August 10 at home versus Oklahoma.

The Mean Green, who have won five C-USA championships in the last four years will host five conference matches including the final three of the regular season. In non-conference, they will face a loaded schedule that includes home matches against Oklahoma, SMU and Alabama. On August 27, UNT travels to 2001 national champion Santa Clara.

The matches against OU and SMU will count as exhibitions, however.

“I feel good about the strength of our schedule and allowing our fans to see several outstanding matches,” Hedlund said. "The drive for five C-USA championships in a row will be our motivation this year and it won't be easy especially with a huge target on our back but we welcome the challenge and are very excited about the upcoming season."

Since joining C-USA in 2013, UNT has posted a combined 38-7-5 record in regular season conference matches. Its 38 wins are three more than any other school and its .810 winning percentage is also the best.

Digging even deeper, the Mean Green soccer team owns a 48-10-5 record in C-USA matches, including in the postseason. Their 48 wins are by far the most. Furthermore, UNT hasn't lost a home conference match since Oct. 31, 2008 when they were in the Sun Belt Conference.

North Texas’ winning tradition goes well beyond just the last five seasons. In its 23-year history, UNT has never had a losing season.

This coming season should be another action-packed year with high expectations as the Mean Green, who were named the 2017-18 North Texas Team of the Year, only lost two seniors from last year’s championship squad. They also return Dominique James, Aaliyah Nolan and Brittnye Lawson who were voted all-conference last season. In addition to those three, the Mean Green return Taylor Torres who was the C-USA Tournament Offensive MVP and Natalie Newell and Natalie McDonough who were named to the all-tournament team.

In May, UNT announced the signing of five highly recruited freshmen, Zoe Gomez, Olivia Klein, Amber Lyons, Kaity Hemperly and Sydney Andrews, all of whom are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and expected to compete for considerable playing time at the beginning of season.
