DENTON, Texas (4/28/09) North Texas women’s soccer head coach John Hedlund has received the first annual Coach of the Year Award, which will be presented annually by the North Texas athletics department to a Mean Green head coach who has demonstrated success and leadership through athletic competition and academic performance.
The Coach of the Year criteria includes team finish in the Sun Belt Conference and team GPA. Also included is the amount of athletes who were Mean Green Scholars, which is a non-freshman or first year transfer who posted a 3.5 or higher GPA. Taken into account as well is penalties against student athletes who missed tutoring sessions, study hall and classes.
“It’s a credit to the players we bring in each year,” Hedlund said. “They all have outstanding character and are very competitive not just on the field but in the classroom as well. This academic award means just as much to me as any of the five conference championships we have won over the years.”
In the classroom the women’s soccer team’s APR was ranked in the top 10 percent in the country two of the last three years with six players earning a perfect 4.0 and a spot on the Presidents Honor Roll. On the field, the team finished second in the Sun Belt Conference regular season with a 15-4-1 record, which included non-conference wins against Big 12 foes OU and Baylor.
North Texas has compiled 14 consecutive winning seasons, the last six of which include 15 or more wins a year. The team is now only four shy of reaching the milestone of 200 wins in the program’s history.
Hedlund is ranked 14th in the country among active winningest coaches and his overall winning percentage is 72 percent, the highest among all active North Texas coaches.
