DENTON - North Texas women’s soccer head coach John Hedlund was named the 2004-05 North Texas Coach of the Year by the Greater Denton Sports Commission at the their annual banquet.
“We are just thrilled to honor Coach Hedlund for all of his accomplishments he has brought to the program, “ said George Young of the Greater Denton Sports Commission. “He has really brought North Texas a long way and they are on their way to becoming a national power and we just wanted to recognize his hard work in getting them there”.
Hedlund, who is set to begin his 11th year at North Texas, led the Mean Green soccer team to its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and a school-record 16 wins last season. Hedlund was also named the Sun Belt Conference Co-Coach of the Year.
During Hedlund’s tenure at North Texas he has won 135 games and currently ranks 14th all-time in the NCAA in winning percentage and 16th among active coaches in the NCAA.
In his 10 years as the head coach of the Mean Green, Hedlund has seen 35 players selected to the all-conference team, 11 players named all-region, and the Mean Green has never had a losing season in the program’s history.
Under Hedlund’s leadership North Texas has captured two Sun Belt Conference regular season championships and one Sun Belt Conference Tournament title.
Hedlund will be honored on Monday, May 16 at the Greater Denton Sports Commission Banquet at the UNT Gateway Center. The banquet begins at 7 p.m. and there will be a silent auction starting at 6 p.m.
