NT Soccer Tops SMU To Close Spring Season
Haggerty's Blast Gives NT Soccer Win Over Ponies
DALLAS – The North Texas soccer team wrapped up its spring season with a 1-0 win at cross-town rival SMU on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Leah Cox threaded a ball into the left side of the 18-yard box and freshman Amber Haggerty buried it behind the SMU goalkeeper in the 35th minute for the game’s lone goal. Tough defense from Tess Graham and Kelsey Hodges helped NT goalie Jackie Kerestine record a shutout after facing just a single shot on goal from SMU.
“It’s always fun playing SMU,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “Both programs have a lot of tradition and respect for each other. This was a nice way to close out the spring.”
North Texas, which last faced the Ponies in the regular season in 2011 (2-1 Mean Green win in Denton), outshot the Mustangs 10-6 on Saturday.
NT has won the last two Sun Belt Conference regular season titles and the 2012 SBC Tournament championship, and will make the transition to Conference USA this fall. The Mean Green opens the 2013 season at Texas Southern on Aug. 23.
