DENTON, Tex. (4/4/06) In a back and forth game, the North Texas women’s soccer team fell to the Chinese National Selection Team 1-0 in the 2006 Panda Cup from the Soccer Field at the Mean Green Village. The Chinese National Selection Team scored the only goal on the night in the 73rd minute of the match and outshot the Mean Green 12-8 for the game.
“I was very proud of the way our team played,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “The Chinese team is very athletic and very talented and I thought that we played very hard”.
The first half was a tight defensive struggle as neither team was able to find the net. North Texas had two scoring chances, the first coming three minutes into the game when Brittany Cleveland fired a shot from 15 yards out that sailed just wide of the net.
Kristen Campbell then had an opportunity in the 29th minute from 12 yards out on the left side, but the shot was deflected just wide.
The Chinese National Selection Team had their best scoring chances in the 19th minute on a header that went over the North Texas net. In the 34th minute the Chinese had a chance in the North Texas box that was derailed by a hand ball. The Mean Green outshot the Chinese team 4-2 in the first half.
North Texas junior goalkeeper Kandice Ellis dazzled the crowd in the second half with two electrifying saves within a span of 60 seconds. The first stop came on a loose ball in the North Texas box as Ellis tipped shot over the net. The second save was off a corner kick from the Chinese team. The shot came from five yards out and Ellis dove over and made the stop.
The Mean Green’s best scoring chances in the second half came when Amanda Jones fired a shot over the Chinese net from eight yards out in the 61st minute.
The Chinese National Selection Team is competing in the 2006 Panda Cup that is a two week tour of Texas and Oklahoma featuring two Chinese teams. The squad is made up of players from the National Team Pool, the National University Selection, a National Selection from professional teams, and a combination of current Olympic Pool Players
