Mean Green Soccer Rounds Out Signing Class With A Top Goal Scorer
Ariel Diaz Joins North Texas Soccer
DENTON - The North Texas soccer program rounded out its 2017 recruiting class with the signing of Ariel Diaz, one of the top forwards out of the state of Texas.
"Ariel is a very talented player, a true forward with incredible skill who has a nose for the goal," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "She has a great understanding of the game, and is highly competitive with a strong passion to win every time she steps on the field. Ariel is a great addition to our program and we're all very excited that she will be playing for the Mean Green the next four years."
Diaz has scored 48 goals and dished out 19 assists in 19 games so far this season as a forward at Monterey Senior High School. The two-time Lone Star Varsity girls soccer player of the year is 14 goals ahead of the next top goal scorer in the district this season.
As a junior, she scored 29 goals, had 14 assists and was named first-team all-district and Texas Association of Soccer Coaches all-region second-team. She posted a 34-goal, 21-assist season as a sophomore and was named the district offensive MVP as well as TASC honorable mention all-region honors. She was also named district offensive MVP as a freshman.
"Ariel is a go-getter. Any obstacle that she faces, she is going to go above and beyond," Monterey head girls soccer coach Taylor Narvaiz said. "She is feisty with amazing ball skills. The ball is like a magnet connected to her foot. "She will bring a fire to the North Texas offense."
The Lubbock native has played club ball with FC Dallas ECNL since 2012. Her team is currently first in league standings. She was named National Elite Prep Showcase all-tournament team honorable mention pick in 2016 and 2017, was ranked in the 2017 Girls IMG Academy 150 Player Pool and attended the U.S. Club Soccer's id2 Program Training Camp in 2013.
Diaz was invited to the U-17 Mexican National Team camp last year and is expected to train with the U-20 Mexican National team pool this summer.
Diaz is the 10th signee in Hedlund's 2017 class. He has signed seven high-school players and three transfers from Power 5 schools, including two that are currently enrolled at North Texas.
