DENTON (2/24/03) -- North Texas head coach John Hedlund has announced the signing of four players to national letters of intent to play soccer for the Mean Green in 2003. The 2003 class includes three high school seniors and one college transfer.
The Mean Green return nine starters from a team that finished 14-5-1 and was the runner-up in the Sun Belt Conference.
"This is a very solid recruiting class. All four player have the potential to make an immediate impact right from the start," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.
Kristen Campbell, Forward, Sache, Texas (Naaman Forest H.S.)
Campbell was named the District 10-5A Offensive MVP her sophomore season which saw her net 26 goals and eight assists. She also earned first team all-district honors her sophomore season. As a freshman Campbell was the District 10-5A Newcomer of the Year with 19 goals. "She is a very determined player," said Naaman Forest head coach Patrick Bailey. "Kristen is a hard worker and loves to score."
Melissa Chapman, Midfielder/Forward, Sache, Texas (Naaman Forest H.S.)
Chapman has been named to the District 10-5A first team her junior and sophomore years. Last season she recorded 11 goals and five assists. During her freshman season Chapman was named to second team all-district. "Melissa is a very aggressive player on both sides of the ball," said Naaman Forest head coach Patrick Baley. "She loves to play hard and is like a warrior on the field."
Angela Hawkins, Midfielder, Coppell, Texas (Coppell H.S.)
Hawkins was named District 6-5A Midfielder of the Year her senior season. Was named to the first team all-district three straight years and was second team all-district her freshman season. Was named to the All-State Team in leading Coppell to 19 wins her senior season. "Angela has developed into probably the most skilled player our program has ever had," said Coppell head coach Chris Stricker.
Andrea Marak, Defender, Irving, Texas (University of Louisville)
At the University of Louisville last season, Marak started in 15 games and had two goals and one assist. In high school she scored 19 goals and had 10 assists her senior season at Coppell High School. She was named district utility player of the year in 2001. In 2000 she was named the district offensive player of the year and in 1999 she was named the district newcomer of the year.
