Hedlund Announces 2008 Soccer Signings

DENTON, Texas (2/6/08) The North Texas women’s soccer team announced the signing of seven players to National Letters of Intent. The Mean Green, coming off its fourth straight season of 15 wins or more, added one of its largest classes in recent memory.

 

"I'm very excited about this 2008 class coming in for next fall, especially after losing an outstanding group of seniors. Once again we stayed in state and hit the Dallas and Houston areas pretty hard and feel we have several new players that can make an immediate impact and continue the winning tradition here at North Texas,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.

 

Kelsey Perlman, Forward, Allen, Texas (Allen High School)

Perlman was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. She played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for four years and was in the Olympic Development Program Region III Pool for two years. Her high school team was ranked No. 1 nationally. Her club team, Sting, was ranked No. 15 in Region III and No. 4 in North Texas. Perlman graduated in the top 10 percent of her graduating class with a 4.0 GPA.

 

Shannon Gorrie, Defender, Rowlett, Texas (Rowlett High School)

Gorrie was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. She played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for four years and attended the Olympic Development Program Region III Camp for two years. Her club team, Texans Red, was ranked No. 1 nationally, No. 1 in Region III and No. 1 in North Texas. They advanced to the National Championship game in 2007. Gorrie was honored as Best Offensive Player in 2005 and was team captain for two years. She was in the top 10 percent of her graduating class with a 3.8 GPA.

 

Kara Brooks, Forward/Defender, Hurst, Texas (L.D. Bell)

Brooks was named District 7-5A MVP and Forward of the Year. She was a three-time all-district performer and was also named to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Tarrant County Super Team twice and the Dallas Morning News All-Area Team. As a junior, she scored 28 goals with four assists. Brooks played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team from 2002-04 and participated in the Olympic Region III Camp in 2003. Her club team, Sting, was ranked No. 18 nationally, No. 5 in Region III and No. 2 in North Texas. Brooks played on the District 7-5A All-Academic Team and graduated with a 3.84 GPA.

 

Casey Lerond, Forward/Midfield, Cedar Hill, Texas (Cedar Hill High School)

Lerond was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. She played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for two years and the Olympic Development Program Team in 2006. Her club team, Texans Red, was ranked No. 1 nationally, No. 1 in Region III and No. 1 in North Texas. They advanced to the National Championship game in 2007. Lerond graduated in the top 20 percent of her class with a 3.5 GPA.

 

Rachel Turpin, Forward/Defender/Midfield, Kingwood, Texas (Kingwood High School)

Turpin was a three-year varsity starter. Her club team TSC Challenge was ranked No. 35 nationally, No. 6 in Region III and No. 1 in South Texas. The team was also seven-time State Cup Champions. Turpin graduated with a 3.7 GPA.

 

Hannah Crawford, Defender, Spring, Texas (Klein Collins High School)

Crawford was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. Her club team, TSC Challenge, was ranked No. 35 nationally, No. 6 in Region III and No. 1 in South Texas. The team was also seven-time State Cup Champions. Crawford played for the South Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for two years and the Olympic Development Program Region III team in 2004. She was an A Honor Roll student.

 

 

Julie Lackey, Defender/Midfield, Humble, Texas (Atascocita High School)

Lackey was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. Her club team, TSC Challenge, was ranked No. 35 nationally, No. 6 in Region III and No. 1 in South Texas. The team was also seven-time State Cup Champions. Lackey was honored as Offensive MVP in 2007. She was in the top 2 percent of her graduating class with a 5.0 GPA.

 

Jessica Jackson, Forward/Defender, Flower Mound, Texas (Marcus High School)

Jackson was a three-year varsity soccer letterwinner and received District 8-5A Honorable Mention honors. Her high school team played in three state semi-finalist games. Jackson played for the Aces club team.

 

Katie Wendling, Defender/ Midfield, Plano, Texas (Plano West Senior High School)

Wendling was a three-year varsity starter. Her club team, Spirit Red, was ranked No. 25 in Region III and No. 4 in North Texas. Wendling graduated in the top 15 percent of her class with a 3.94 GPA.

 

Jillian Wright, Goalkeeper, Forney, Texas (Forney High School)

Wright was a three-year varsity starter and team captain. She earned District 11-4A Honorable Mention honors during her sophomore year and was named District 11-4A Defensive MVP as a junior. During her junior year, Wright also averaged 0.852 goals against average and posted 14 shutouts. She was in North Texas Olympic Development Program State Pool for two years and played for the Genesis club team.
