Hedlund Announces 2009 Soccer Signings
DENTON, Texas (2/5/09) ? The North Texas women's soccer team announced the signing of six players to National Letters of Intent Thursday afternoon.
DENTON, Texas (2/5/09) The North Texas women’s soccer team announced the signing of six players to National Letters of Intent Thursday afternoon. The Mean Green, coming off its fifth straight season of 15 wins or more, made it to the semi-finals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in 2008 before falling to Western Kentucky.
Five of the players from this class were teammates off the high profile club team Dallas Sting 91, which is nationally ranked and considered one of the best teams in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
“These six players have all played at a very high level and give us exactly what we need going into next fall,” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “After losing several seniors from last year we needed to add more speed, size and physical play and with this group of freshmen coming in I really feel we have covered those areas for next fall.”
Ellen Scarfone, Midfielder, Mesquite, Texas (Poteet High School)
Scarfone was a two-time all-district performer and was a four-year varsity starter. She was the 2007-08 Midfielder of the Year and was also first-team all-district that season. She played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for six years and attended the Olympic Development Program Region III Camp for four years. She was also a member of the ODP Regional Team for four years and was part of the National Pool for two seasons. Her club team, Sting 91, was ranked 14th nationally, No. 4 in Region III, and second in North Texas. Scarfone had a GPA of 3.02.
Haley Newsom, Goalkeeper, Richardson, Texas (JJ Pearce High School)
Newsom was a two-time all-district performer and was a four-year varsity starter. In 2007 JJ Pearce was District 14-4A champions and advanced to the quarter finals. Newsom was first-team all-district in 2007-08 and was second-team all-district in 2006-07.She played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for four seasons and attended the Olympic Development Program Region III Camp three years. She played club ball for Sting 91 for two seasons following playing for Sting Dallas White where she was a team captain in 2005 and 2006. Last season Sting 91 was ranked 14th nationally, No. 4 in Region III, and second in North Texas. Newsom had a GPA of 3.50.
Chelsea Heimann, Defender/Midfielder, Grand Prairie, Texas (Nolan Catholic High School)
Heimann played three years of varsity soccer and was a 2007 TAPPS second-team all-district performer. For five seasons she played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team and during that same tenure attended the Region III Olympic Development Program Camp. She is a member of nationally ranked (14th) Sting Royal 91 for three years and before that was a member of Texans 91 Red. Heimann had a GPA 3.47.
Danielle Guilliod, Midfielder/Forward, Rowlett, Texas (American Heritage Academy)
Guilliod played four years of varsity soccer where she was a starter on the boys’ team and was a two-time all-district performer, including a unanimous first-team all-district selection in 2007-08 and was the team captain in 2006 and 2007. She is a member of Sting 91 who is ranked 14th nationally and 2nd in North Texas. Guilliod had a GPA of 3.51.
Carly McDowell, Midfielder/Forward, Plano, Texas (Plano West High School)
McDowell was a letterwinner during her sophomore and freshman seasons for Texas 5A State Champion Plano West (2006). In 2007 she was team captain of Plano West. She spent two years on the Olympic Development Program with 90 North Texas State. She also competed in track and was a gold medalist in the 100M and 200M. McDowell’s spent eight seasons playing club soccer with Sting 91 and was a team captain in 2001 and 2002. McDowell had a GPA of 4.00.
Michelle Young, Forward, Mesquite, Texas (Poteet High School)
Young played for FC Dallas and in high school won Offensive Forward MVP for 2008. She also was first-team all-district in 2008 and 2007.
