Dobson Promoted To NT Soccer's Top Assistant
Seven-Year Coaching Vet Brings Impressive Soccer Resume
DENTON, Texas – After a successful run in Major League Soccer and two seasons as a part-time assistant with the North Texas soccer program, Daniel Dobson has been promoted to the top assistant role on John Hedlund’s coaching staff.
Since Dobson joined the Mean Green, he has helped lead North Texas to a Sun Belt regular season and tournament title, an NCAA Tournament berth and a second-place finish in Conference USA in 2013.
“I’m very excited to be a full time assistant coach under coach John Hedlund,” Dobson said. “I’ve already learned so much from him in the two years that I have been a part of the program. I am going to do everything in my power to help this team win a Conference USA championship. I have a C-USA ring as a player, now I want one as a coach.”
As a player, Dobson was a standout for Memphis from 2001-04. He was named team captain for his senior year and led the Tigers win a C-USA regular season and tournament championship. He became the first Memphis product to sign a Major League Soccer contract, and spent time with both the Kansas City Wizards and Chivas USA.
After his playing career, Dobson has spent seven years coaching club, academy, high school and collegiate soccer squads throughout the Metroplex. This will be his third season with the Mean Green program.
Matt Montayne, who spent the last three years as a part-time assistant coach mentoring NT’s goalkeepers, will remain on staff in the same capacity in 2014.
