Mean Green Soccer's Comeback Falls Short
North Texas Loses In C-USA Semifinals, 3-2
CHARLOTTE -- The North Texas soccer team's hopes of repeating as back-to-back Conference USA tournament champions fell short on Friday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to fourth-seeded Florida Atlantic in semifinal action.
"We were trying to get to our fourth consecutive C-USA championship title game and unfortunately we came up a little short today," North Texas coach John Hedlund said. "Still, the seniors should be really proud of winning the regular-season title three years in a row and now four titles overall. Hopefully, this is not our last game, especially for the seniors. I hope the NCAA selection committee looks at our 15 wins, our tough schedule that we played along with finishing first in the regular season and honors us with a bid. I know we would be a worthy opponent."
The Mean Green came back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game at 2-2 in the 73rd minute. FAU regained the lead in the 82nd minute with a header from inside the six-yard box off a cross.
Down 2-0 in the second half, North Texas scored two goals in 13 minutes to tie the game up. Tori Phillips scored the first goal off a give-and-go by Marchelle Davis in the 60th minute. Davis had the tying goal in the 73rd minute, knocking the ball in the net from close-range after the ball was kicked around in the box. The ball was put into the 18-yard box off a long kick by Tori Phillips.
The two teams scored a combined four goals in the second half after just the one tally in the first period by FAU. The Owls went ahead in the 22nd minute with a one-touch shot outside the 18-yard box that went into the upper right-hand corner of the box.
The Mean Green's offense was held to just two shots in the first half, but came out firing in the second half. Unfortunately, FAU tacked on a second goal at the start of the second half with a through ball that split the Mean Green defense.
The Mean Green, which received votes in the NSCAA national poll this past week and has an RPI of 52, will have to wait until Monday to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament
