Soccer Moves Into Semifinals With 1-0 Win Against WKU
Grisham's Header In The First Half Proves To Be Game-winner
Miami - One of the Mean Green's strengths is set pieces, and the North Texas soccer team took the lead right before half off a corner kick. The header by Molly Grisham ended up being the game-winner, sending the top-seeded Mean Green into the semifinals with a 1-0 victory against No. 8 WKU on Wednesday afternoon at the FIU Soccer Complex.
"The humidity might of been the biggest factor today for both teams," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Today's win sets the all-time record at North Texas for single-season wins with 17. The girls really wanted to get to that special number this year and now we will rest up and look forward to playing in the semi-finals on Friday."
The goal came off a corner kick by Karla Pineda, who has served up eight assists this season. The kick was cleared off the goal line but the ball went right to Grisham inside the 18-yard box, who headed it into the back of the net with five seconds left in the first half.
WKU had held the upper hand in possession and shots in the first half, but the Mean Green just needed that one corner kick to take the lead.
The Hilltoppers had numerous opportunities in the game, including a shot that went off the post in the 72nd minute. WKU held the advantage in shots, 16-8.
In the second half, North Texas played more defensively and had to hold off WKU who pushed attackers forward throughout the second period.
