Holden Sends Mean Green To Semifinals With Golden Goal
Top-Seeded Mean Green Defeats No. 8 ODU, 2-1
CHARLOTTE -- Senior forward Rachel Holden scored in dramatic fashion, sending the top-seeded North Texas soccer team into the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship with a golden goal at the start of the first overtime period against Old Dominion on Wednesday morning. The goal gave the Mean Green a 2-1 victory.
"The tournament is all about surviving and moving on," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "I thought their late goal was definitely offsides, but you have to fight through adversity to win championships and Rachel came up big for us in overtime to help us get the win."
It looked like the Mean Green was going to advance with a 1-0 victory in regulation, but the Lady Monarchs sent the game into overtime with a header into the left-hand side of the net off a cross with 22 seconds left.
The Mean Green quickly regrouped, and the starters returned to the field after the five-minute break. In just the second minute of play in overtime, Hailey Sutton beat her defender on the right side and sent a chipped ball into the box. The ball bounced once in the middle of the field, and Holden beat her defender and the goalkeeper to the ball, heading it into the back of the net for the gamewinner.
Anna Flobeck gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the 83rd minute with a putback from just inside the 18-yard box. The low shot went into the right-hand corner of the net past a diving goalkeeper. Sutton had started the play with a pass wide to Taylor Torres who crossed the ball into the box. The goalkeeper punched the ball out but the ball fell at the feet of Flobeck.
The game opened up in the second half after each team posted just three shots in the opening period. The Mean Green's best opportunity came in the 60th minute with a Torres shot that went off the post.
The North Texas defense limited ODU to just three shots on goal.
