DENVER, Colo.- North Texas fell to No. 22 Denver in the regular season finale Friday night. Katie Vaughn scored the game's lone goal in the 14th minute for the Pioneers.
North Texas falls to 12-6-2 on the season and 7-3-1 in Sun Belt play. The Mean Green will enter the Sun Belt Tournament as the No. 3 seed, and will take on Western Kentucky on Wednesday, November 3 in Bowling Green, Ky. Denver completes a perfect season in the Sun Belt, going 16-2-0 on the year and 10-0-0 in the Sun Belt.
"When you have the two richest programs in the SBC, when it comes too conference titles and NCAA appearances squaring off you know its going to be a barnburner of a game," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "I can see why some polls have them ranked 17th in the country but for me, I really thought we matched up with them very well throughout the night and had a handful of great opportunities in front of their goal."
"We've been to the championship game eight times now so it would not surprise me at all to see these two teams in this years final to see who moves on to the NCAA Tournament," added Hedlund
"We had a sound effort tonight and were able to defeat a really good team that we may run into later in the playoffs,"
said Denver head coach Jeff Hooker.
Mandy Hall stopped a 36th minute penalty kick to keep North Texas in the game. Hall has stopped two penalties on three attempts this season. Hall made a total of six saves on the night.
Michelle Young paced the North Texas attack with five shots, three of which were on goal.
The Pioneers had the slight edge in shots, 15-13. Denver earned five corners to North Texas' one.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament starts Wednesday, November 6 in Bowling Green, Ky. North Texas will take on hosts Western Kentucky in the first round. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
