MIAMI -- The North Texas soccer team won the Conference USA regular-season title for the third straight year with a 3-2 victory against Florida International on Friday afternoon. The Mean Green also clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming C-USA Conference Championship.

The Mean Green won a share of the title with the victory, and can win the regular-season title outright with a win or tie on Sunday afternoon against Louisiana Tech. North Texas has now won its third straight regular-season conference title.

"I'm really proud of my team," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "We wanted to lock down the No. 1 seed today and claim at least a share of the title, and the girls were really determined to get the win today against a hard-fought FIU team. To win three consecutive season titles in Conference USA is simply amazing."

North Texas knew it needed a win coming in to the game against FIU, but the Panthers were not going to make it easy on the Mean Green. North Texas took leads in the game, but FIU had an answer each time. The Panthers tied the game, 2-2, in the 79th minute, but Lauryn Bruffett had the gamewinner two minutes later with a header inside the 6-yard box.

Set pieces were key for the Mean Green in Friday's win. The lead up to Bruffett's goal started with a Tori Phillips' corner kick. After the kick was sent in by Phillips, the ball bounced around in the box before Bruffett headed it in far post.

Phillips also was involved in the Mean Green's first goal. She had the assist with a corner kick that went right into the middle of the 18-yard box. Anna Flobeck went right up and headed the ball into the far corner of the net to give North Texas the early lead in the 35th minute.

Cat Sebazco added to the lead after coming off the bench in the 25th minute. She finished off a crazy play after the ball was deflected by FIU defenders, and the FIU goalkeeper was out of the box.

FIU quickly responded with a goal to cut the lead back to one. Alyssa Robinson put in a cross that Bria Williams tapped into the goal from the far post.
