Offensive Explosion Leads To Mean Green Soccer Victory
North Texas Defeats Charlotte, 5-0
DENTON - The North Texas soccer team inched one step closer to a conference championship with a 5-0 win against Charlotte on Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
"Charlotte is a very good team," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "When we are finishing our opportunities we are very tough to beat."
With the win over Charlotte, North Texas remains in first place in Conference USA with 19 points, while Rice and UTEP remain in second place with 16 points each. The Mean Green can clinch a share of the regular season championship with a victory on Sunday.
The Mean Green scored an early goal in the 16th minute and then the offensive floodgates opened in the second period with three goals in a span of eight minutes.
Charlotte had a few opportunities but was unable to find the back of the net. The visitors also lost their starting goalkeeper to an injury in the 19th minute of the game.
Karla Pineda continued her stellar year of play with two goals and an assist in the win. She started the scoring in the 16th minute by creating an opportunity for herself at the top of the box and targeted the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the goal.
The Mean Green opened up the game in the second half. Anna Flobeck and Rachel Holden connected in the 60th minute with a goal and an assist, and then freshman Tori Phillips recorded her first goal of her career with a booming kick that went over the goalkeeper's head.
Pineda helped seal the win with another low shot into the corner off the net and then served up a ball off a set play that Jackie Moreau headed into the goal.
"Karla has been our MVP this season," said Hedlund. "She is playing at another level. She is having a stellar year."
