Mean Green Soccer Wins Third Straight Game
North Texas Defeats Old Dominion, 2-1
DENTON -- The North Texas soccer team moved one step closer to defending its regular-season conference title with a 2-1 win against Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Mean Green moves into a three-way tie for first place in the Conference USA standings alongside WKU and Rice with 21 points. With two games remaining, North Texas controls its own destiny. The Hilltoppers and the Owls each have one game remaining in the regular season.
"Give ODU a lot credit, they came back from a two-goal deficit to make the game very interesting," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "We had some opportunities in the second half to extend our lead, but unfortunately the ball would not go in the net and once again we had to rely on our defense to get the win. In my opinion, ODU is definitely a tournament team. It really shows how deep our conference is from top to bottom with all fourteen teams battling for eight spots."
North Texas took a 2-0 lead in the first half off goals by Hailey Sutton and Marchelle Davis. ODU controlled a lot of the possession in the first half, but the Mean Green defense forced the visitors to take shots outside the 18-yard box, which North Texas goalkeeper Miranda Schoening was able to easily make the saves.
ODU was dangerous in the air off set pieces. Schoening was forced to make a diving save to stop a header by ODU in the sixth minute.
Anna Flobeck had another strong game in the air, winning numerous 50/50 balls. One of those headers found the feet of Rachel Holden. The forward placed a through ball to Sutton, who was able to get by her defender and aim her shot underneath a diving ODU goalkeeper for the first goal in the 15th minute.
North Texas took advantage of one of its corner kicks in the 34th minute. Katie Gernsbacher sent a ball into the box that Flobeck was able to get her head on. The header went off the post, and Davis beat the scrum to the ball to put it in the back of the net.
The Lady Monarchs kept up the pressure in the second half. Off a free kick just outside the box, Jackie Stroud snuck the ball past the wall and Schoening into the left-hand corner of the goal in the 73rd minute for ODU's first goal of the game.
The goal put the pressure back on the Mean Green defense which were able to hold off the visitors for the remainder of the game.
