DENTON -- In a key game between one of the top offensive teams and one of the top defensive teams in Conference USA, the North Texas soccer team came out victorious with a 2-0 win against Charlotte.

"It was a heavy-weight match between two of the best teams in the conference," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "Charlotte's offense can come at you in waves much like what we saw with No. 15 Arkansas earlier in the year. They've improved drastically as a team from last year and I just knew going in it was going to be a battle between their offense and our defense. I'm very proud of the energy level and work rate my team gave especially tonight for such a great cause (Breast Cancer Awareness)."

The Mean Green were forced to move a few players around with Rachel Holden missing the game due to yellow card accumulation. Brittnye Loewen came off the bench to start at forward, and Marchelle Davis was moved from the midfield to forward.

The first half was evenly matched with each team splitting possession and shots. Both teams were trying to split each other's defense with quick passes or long through balls.

Junior defender Chelsei Soto finally found the key pass, slicing a ball through the left side of Charlotte's defense at the start of the second half. Davis, playing forward for the first time this season, ran in front of the central back to collect the pass and shot the ball into the right-hand corner of the goal as the Charlotte goalkeeper was running out.

Charlotte immediately went on the offensive after the goal, forcing North Texas goalkeeper Miranda Schoening to make two key saves in the 47th and the 48th minute.

A Charlotte foul late in the game led to the second goal for North Texas. Tori Phillips took a long free kick into the 49ers 18-yard box, and a Charlotte defender headed the ball backwards into their net for an own goal.

The Mean Green defense held the conference's leading scorer Martha Thomas to just one shot on goal
