HOUSTON - The North Texas soccer team remains in first place in the conference standings after playing to a 1-1 tie with Rice on Sunday afternoon in Houston.

A defensive battle, the Mean Green faced a season-high 31 shots by the Owls. Jackie Kerestine made a career-high 11 saves in goal. On the other side of the field, North Texas was held to seven shots on goal.

"I was really proud of the way my team battled today," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "You had two very good teams going at each other all day. It was kind of fitting that the game ended in a tie."

North Texas took an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute off an own goal by the Rice defense on a free kick. Tori Phillips hit a booming kick 60 yards into the Owls goal box, and it was headed backwards by a Rice defender into the net.

As rain began to fall, Rice tied the game off a corner kick in the 54th minute. It was the first goal the Mean Green has allowed in conference play this season.

The game was halted in the 61st minute due to lightning. After a 40-minute delay, neither team was able to score, forcing overtime. Kerestine made two saves in the two overtime periods to secure the tie.

North Texas is now 4-0-1 in conference play. The Mean Green is the only team in the conference without a loss. North Texas remains in first place with 13 points. Rice and Old Dominion are tied for second with 10 points.
