SAN ANTONIO-- The North Texas soccer team was handed its first Conference USA loss of the season, falling to the University of Texas-San Antonio, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.

UTSA was physical and able to keep possession from the Mean Green, leading to a 17-11 advantage in shots. The Mean Green have come back from early goals in games against Rice and Marshall, but were unable to accomplish the same feat against UTSA.

"We know we're going to get everyone's best, but that's the price of winning championships and trying to defend last year's titles," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Credit UTSA, they placed well today, where we can out flat and out of sync from the start. We need to put this loss behind us. We are still 4-1 at the halfway mark with three of our last five games at home. We still control our destiny."

UTSA stole a play out of the Mean Green's recent playbook by scoring the early goal. The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute off a long service by the UTSA goalkeeper. The long kick was possessed by Brianna Livecchi, who moved around a North Texas defender and placed a shot past Mean Green goalkeeper Miranda Schoening.

The two teams each drew four corner kicks, but the Roadrunners were the ones who were able to convert. In the second half, Olivia Nicholls headed the ball off a short corner into the near post to put UTSA ahead by two.

UTSA converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to seal the win after North Texas was called for a hand ball in the 18-yard box.
