EL PASO -- For the second straight game, Hailey Sutton scored an early goal for the Mean Green. The one goal was all the Mean Green needed, as the North Texas soccer team won its fourth straight Conference USA game with a 1-0 victory against the Miners on Friday night.

"It almost seemed like a track meet out there at times with all of the speed both teams possessed," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "With UTEP being undefeated at home, we knew this was going to be a very tight match. Again, Hailey came up big for us with the early goal, and defensively we were solid across the back and in goal. But for me, in order to earn quality wins on the road, like UTEP and Rice, it really comes down to having a great team effort."

North Texas held the majority of the possession and had few good chances on goal but relied on its defense following the early goal. In just her second start, North Texas goalkeeper Miranda Schoening recorded her first individual shutout with three saves. On the other side of the field, the Mean Green broke UTEP's five-game shutout streak at home with the goal and the victory.

Taylor Torres started the Mean Green attack in the early minutes with a shot that was blocked by the UTEP defense. Marchelle Davis regained possession, and took a shot towards the right post that goalkeeper Alyssa Palacios pushed away with a diving save. She was unable to hold onto the ball, and Sutton put away the rebound with a shot that went into upper left-hand corner of the goal.

UTEP had three chances to tie the game in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net. The Miners responded to the goal with a shot that went off the post in the 4th minute. Another shot in the 14th minute hit the crossbar, and Jeanna Mullen was 1 v 1 with Schoening but hit the ball wide in the 27th minute.

The Mean Green had five shots on goal in the second half, but Palacios was there to make the key stops, including more than one punch over the goal.
