NT Soccer Plays FIU To A Draw In Denton

Box Score

DENTON, Texas (10/7/12) - After a scoreless first half, North Texas and FIU exchanged goals 17 minutes into the second half and that would be it as the Panthers and Mean Green tied after double overtime at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

"We threw everything at them, I lost count on how many shots and corners we had today," head coach Hedlund said. "We need to do a better job of finishing are chances in front of the goal but give FIU's goalkeeper credit she was outstanding throughout the game and made some really big saves."

The Mean Green outshot FIU 31-7 on the game, but Panther goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage totaled 16 saves when the dust had cleared in Denton.

The first half was a defensive struggle, but the second half became a shooting frenzy. NT North Texas fired 12 shots in the remaining half alone as well as 10 more in OT.

It was in the 63rd minute that the two Sun Belt clubs traded goals with Scarlett Montoya putting one in off the cross by Chelsea Leiva for the Panthers and Karla Pineda retaliating with a dribble penetration shot for North Texas. It was Pineda's sixth goal of the season and put her atop the team's point total list.

The Mean Green remain unbeaten in the Sun Belt Conference and move to 10-3-2 on the season. FIU moves to 6-5-2 on the year.

North Texas returns to action on Friday, Oct. 12, in Jonesboro, Ark., for a matchup with Arkansas State.
