Holden Scores The Game-Winning Goal Against FIU
Mean Green Soccer Wins Second Straight Conference Game
DENTON -- For the second game in a row, the North Texas soccer team came up with a late second-half goal to take a 1-0 victory against FIU on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
Junior Rachel Holden came up with the gamewinner on Sunday after Amber Haggerty took the honors in Friday's win against Florida Atlantic. The Mean Green had a number of good looks in the first half but were not able to find the back of the net.
"We were so close all game, so it was a relief to finally get the goal," said North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine. The senior posted four saves to record her eighth shutout of the season.
North Texas outshot the Panthers, 11-5, in the first half but was unable to get on the scoreboard. Holden hit the post in the 32nd minute after getting a through ball from Karla Pineda.
Holden found the back of the net in the 73rd minute off a corner kick by Karla Pineda. An FIU clearance stayed inside the penalty box, Alexsis Cable knocked it down, and Holden volleyed the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the box.
The Mean Green defense held off FIU for the final 17 minutes to record its ninth shutout of the season.
