Rice Hands Soccer Its First Conference Loss Of Season
Owls Shutout North Texas, 4-0
Houston, Texas - The Rice women's soccer team handed the Mean Green its first conference loss of the season with a 4-0 shutout on Friday night at Holloway Field.
North Texas falls to 7-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Conference USA play, while Rice improves to 4-4-2 and 2-1 in C-USA.
Despite outshooting the Owls 26-17, North Texas could not find the back of the net. The Mean Green held the edge in shots at the half, 14-10, and hit the post four times, but still found itself down by one goal.
"The difference in the game was that we did not finish our chances and they did," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We continue to get good looks and outshoot every team we play but unfortunately the ball either hits off the crossbar, the post or a simple missed shot. Hopefully, our luck starts to change."
Rice scored two goals in a span of six minutes at the start of the second half to take control of the game. Gabriela Iribarne scored her second goal of the game with a header off a cross in the 77th minute to seal the win for the Owls. All three goals in the second half were scored off crosses.
