DENTON -- The North Texas soccer team opened its conference season with two come-from-behind wins. The Mean Green made sure that they did not get down early again for their Sunday showdown with Western Kentucky.

Hailey Sutton scored just 19 seconds into the game to give North Texas its first early lead since Rachel Holden scored 26 seconds into the game against Texas Southern on Sept. 9. North Texas led the entire game, but needed that second goal in the 70th minute to hold onto the 2-1 victory against the Hilltoppers.

"Well a 2-0 lead is just not safe especially against a talented team like Western Kentucky," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "I'm happy with the win, but really proud of my team rallying around Miranda and Tori today; those two played outstanding and we needed it from them with the two unfortunate injuries we had during the week. The early goal by Hailey was huge and really helped us set the tone and Cat's goal in the second half was vital for us to get the win."

On a warm afternoon, the Mean Green's depth was vital for the victory that extended NT's record to 3-0 in C-USA. Tori Phillips played in place of Alexsis Cable in the defense, and Miranda Schoening started her first game in goal in place of Brooke Bradley.

Sutton scored her second goal of the season in her first start of the season at forward. Cat Sebazco came off the bench to score the game-winning goal, and eight players subbed into the game to give the starters a break.

The Hilltoppers took the kickoff, but Marchelle Davis stepped in for the quick steal, and passed the ball off to Holden, who raced down the field and found an open Sutton. The graduate student collected the pass and put away her first shot of the game.

WKU regained its composure and had a great opportunity on goal in the 39th minute when Schoening made a diving save on a shot by Sarah Gorham. The Mean Green held the edge in shots in the first half, 7-3, but had to play a lot of defense in the second period.

The Mean Green capitalized on a WKU foul in the 70th minute. Tori Phillips took the kick, and Anna Flobeck found the end of it, heading the ball towards goal. The ball ricocheted off the post, and Sebazco was right there to put in the rebound.

WKU cut the lead to one 10 minutes later off a defensive breakdown in the back. The Mean Green defense held on for the final nine minutes to seal the win.
