LAFAYETTE, La.- North Texas soccer extended its Sun Belt winning streak to four games by defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 4-0 at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility on Sunday. North Texas' 4-0-0 start in the Sun Belt is its best since 2007.
North Texas (9-3-1, 4-0-0 Sun Belt) improves its series record to 15-0-0 against Louisiana-Lafayette (4-8-1, 0-4-0 Sun Belt). North Texas has only allowed one goal to the Ragin' Cajuns in Sun Belt play since 2004.
"We knew going in that Louisiana-Lafayette had a heartbreaking overtime loss to Denver on Friday, where several of [Louisiana-Lafayette head coach] Scot Wieland's athletes played major minutes, so I wanted to use my bench as much as possible to wear them down and we were successful," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "It was a total team effort today and now we look forward to playing two home games in front of our fans next weekend," added Hedlund.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine earned her third consecutive shutout and extended her scoreless streak to 303:02, while making two saves. Kerestine has four shutouts on the season, which already ranks eighth in a single season at North Texas.
Sophomore Kelsey Hodges scored on a free kick from midfield in the 14th minute to give the Mean Green a 1-0 lead. The goal was Hodges' fifth of the season, and 15th of her career.
The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Michelle Young, scored in the 18th minute, with an assist by Kelsey Perlman, for her ninth goal of the season. Young moves into a tie with Brittany Cleveland and Michelle Pratz for ninth all-time at North Texas with 26 career goals.
Junior Katelyn Ross contributed by knocking in a rebound for her third goal of the season in the 31st minute, with an assist by Julie Lackey, her third of the year.
Senior Nikki Crocco continued her career year with her seventh tally of the year in the 67th minute with assists from Ellen Scarfone and Kelsey Perlman. Scarfone now has three assists and two goals in Sun Belt games, while Perlman has four assists on the season after today's game.
North Texas out-shot Louisiana-Lafayette 18-6 and earned 11 corners to Louisiana-Lafayette's two.
North Texas returns to the field at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 7 against Troy at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
