Unbeaten Streak Stretches to Seven
Mean Green Soccer Team Defeats WKU, 1-0
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Mean Green soccer team improved to 2-0-1 in Conference USA play and extended its mark of unbeaten games to seven straight with a 1-0 win over Western Kentucky Sunday afternoon.
"It is never easy to have your first three conference games on the road, especially against quality opponents," head coach John Hedlund said. "Getting through these three games without a loss will give us confidence as we have five of our last seven games at home."
It took a little time for North Texas (7-2-2) to get going against the Hilltoppers (3-7-1, 0-3-1 in C-USA). North Texas' Taylor Torres scored the game's only goal with 1:10 left to play in the first half, her second goal of the week and fifth of the season, which is a career high for the junior from Frisco. Freshman Brooke Lampe assisted on the goal, which was her first assist of the season.
"I thought we all played and connected well," Torres said. "Our defense is a huge part for the team. Coach Hedlund has always talked about how the defense is a big impact for our team. We had many opportunities for the offense to score but we just weren't there to finish. We will next time."
North Texas out-shot the Hilltoppers 11-9, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Brooke Bradley continued her hot streak with three saves against WKU, giving her 13 saves while allowing just one goal in three league games this season.
he win marked the fifth-straight win over the Hilltoppers dating back to the 2012 season. North Texas is undefeated on the road this year and hasn't lost a match since a 1-0 loss at home against Texas on Aug. 27.
"With the win it puts us in a good place going forward with five out of the last seven games at home," senior defender Tori Phillips said. "I couldn't be more proud of my team right now."
North Texas returns home to play UTEP on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.
