Kerestine Becomes Shutout Leader In 1-0 Victory
Mean Green Soccer Defeats Louisiana Tech In C-USA Opener
DENTON -In a game that came down to defense, the Mean Green's goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine held the visitors scoreless and became the school's all-time shutout leader in a 1-0 victory against Louisiana Tech on Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
In a game where North Texas dominated all facets of the game but managed just one goal, the Mean Green defense had to come up strong to hold onto the victory. Kerestine and the back four held off a late attack by the Lady Techsters to give the Mean Green an opening conference victory.
"It's a win," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Louisiana Tech is a very good team, very defensive oriented. We were able to get one in, and we were hoping for more, but that's a credit to them."
North Texas dominated the possession in the first half, outshooting the Lady Techsters, 10-1 in the opening 45 minutes. Kerestine barely touched the ball in the first half, coming up with no stats in the save column.
After being double-teamed for most of the season so far, Rachel Holden created a few early chances for herself. In the opening 20 minutes, she posted three shots that went wide and one that was saved by the keeper. She finished the game with a team-high 10 shots.
After entering the game in the 32nd minute, Anna Flobeck changed the game when she beat LTech's goalie to the ball off a cross, and headed it into the back of the net.
"I woke up this morning, and I was feeling it," said Flobeck. "As soon as I went up in the air, I knew it was going in."
The game became more physical in the second half with each team more than doubling their foul calls. Kerestine made three saves to preserve the win.
