North Texas And Louisiana Tech Tie, 1-1
Mean Green Offense Comes Alive In Second Half
Sept. 24, 2017
RUSTON, LOUISIANA -- The North Texas soccer team ended Sunday's match with Louisiana Tech in a 1-1 tie.
A second half offensive surge by the Mean Green (5-2-2, 1-0-1 C-USA) sent the match into overtime after the Lady Techsters (8-2-3, 1-1-1 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the first half.
"I was proud of the way the women battled through the adversity they faced today," said head coach John Hedlund. "Coming back from a defensive mishap and then scoring two goals that were called back says a lot about the character of this team."
In what was a scrappy match by both teams, Louisiana Tech scored in the 31st minute on a rebound off the post. The Mean Green kept the game tight with stout defense from their on out but struggled to muster much offense and went into the half with only five shot attempts to the Lady Techsters' nine.
North Texas did have a couple goals taken off the board Sunday, including one following a scramble in the box. The goal was called no good after the linesman called the Mean Green for offsides.
But the script changed in second half. North Texas put up 12 shots, most on goal, and finally found the back of the net during a scrum in the box in the 80th minute. The goal came off the foot of freshman Elle Marie DeFrain. It's her first goal of her career.
Meanwhile, the Lady Techsters struggled to get through the Mean Green defensive wall and never had any serious scoring opportunities.
"In the second half we really came at La Tech pretty hard and forced the play down at their end with at least a dozen shots and several corners but we will take the tie and move on to our third straight road game next week."
After only putting up five shots in the first half, the Mean Green finished with 20. Goalie Brooke Bradley had five saves on the day, which is tied for the second-most this season.
North Texas has a week off before they return to play. They travel to Western Kentucky on Oct. 1 for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
