HUNTINGTON, W. VA. -- Despite attempting 14 fewer shots than its season average and only putting one on goal, the North Texas soccer team defeated Marshall 1-0 Friday night in the Conference USA opener.

The goal came in the 13th minute on a deep strike from outside the box by Mean Green senior defender Katie Gernsbacher. It's the Texas transfer's first career goal with North Texas.

"It felt awesome scoring," Gernsbacher said. "This was definitely a hard fought win. It's not easy to come this far on the road and walk away with three points but we fought hard."

The Mean Green (5-2-1, 1-0 C-USA) traveled to Marshall (2-7-0, 0-2 C-USA) after not playing a match in nearly two weeks due to Hurricane Irma.

Though the offense had a season low six shot attempts, the defense played huge throughout Thursday's match. They limited the Thundering Herd to 11 shot attempts, which is tied for the second fewest by a Mean Green opponent this year and the shutout is North Texas' fourth this year.

"Offensively we had a chance to add to Katie's first half goal with a few one vs. one opportunities but the finishing tonight just wasn't there," said head coach John Hedlund. "Road wins are never easy especially in conference play but thankfully our defense played outstanding tonight and Brooke was solid in goal."

In goal, junior Brooke Bradley had five saves, which is one off her season-best and enough for the Mean Green victory.

"We had a couple chances on the offensive end but couldn't bury more than the one," Gernsbacher said. "At the end of the day a 1-0 win is still three points so we're definitely walking away happy."

Gernsbacher is now the 10th different North Texas player to score a goal this season. Last year they finished with nine different players.

This is the second consecutive season North Texas has opened conference play with a win. They've won five of the last seven conference openers. The only two times they didn't win were ties, including the last time they played at Marshall in 2015.
