Pineda Scores Game Winner Against Oral Roberts
Mean Green Soccer Wins Fifth Straight Game
DENTON -- For the second straight game, senior midfielder Karla Pineda scored the game-winning goal late in the second half to give the North Texas soccer team a 1-0 victory against Oral Roberts on Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
"We played much better in the second half then the first," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We had two great opportunities in their six-yard box that we should have finished, but ORU's goalkeeper made two great saves that we all thought were going in. We just could not extend the lead and get the cushion we needed to close out a solid team like Oral Roberts who played outstanding tonight."
The Mean Green started off slow, and the Golden Eagles took advantage with early shots on goal against netminder Jackie Kerestine. ORU outshot the Mean Green, 6-3, in the first period.
The second half was a different team. Rachel Holden and Lindsey Hulstein both had headers inside the box that ORU's Ryliegh Bohnenstiehl made stops on in the first six minutes. The increased pressure led to more fouls by ORU, setting up Pineda's penalty kick.
Holden pushed past her defender who took her down in the box in the 74th minute. Pineda converted her second penalty kick of the season to put North Texas ahead.
The Mean Green defense also stepped up the intensity in the second half. The backline held the Golden Eagles to just two shots in the second period. Jackie Kerestine made three saves with just one coming in the second period.
