For the first time in nearly two years, North Texas soccer lost a game at home with a 1-0 defeat to the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday, September 16.
DENTON, Texas (9/16/12) - For the first time in nearly two years, North Texas soccer lost a game at home with a 1-0 defeat to the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday, September 16.
The last loss for North Texas at the Mean Green Soccer Complex happened on September 17, 2010, when the SMU Mustangs took down the Mean Green 3-2 in overtime. North Texas went on a 17-game unbeaten streak following that loss.
North Texas senior forward Michelle Young had three shots against TCU, including one that ricocheted off the near post in the 20th minute. Young's near-make turned out to be the best opportunity the Mean Green had to score in the first half despite outshooting the Horned Frogs 5-4 in the first 45 minutes.
TCU (5-3-1) took opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when junior defender Kelly Johnson headed her second goal of the season past North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine. Johnson was able to leap high enough for a pass from teammate Brittany Slyman and put the Horned Frogs ahead.
North Texas (5-3-1) went into halftime trailing at home for the first time since November 6, 2008, against Western Kentucky. The Mean Green also lost that game 1-0.
Junior defender Alli Guderian had the best chance in the second half to tie the game, but her shot in the 75th minute was punched away by TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold.
North Texas has lost three straight games for the first time since Sept. 11-18, 2011, when the Mean Green also lost the last three games before Sun Belt Conference play. North Texas ended up winning the SBC title last season, winning its first five conference games.
The Mean Green starts conference action on Friday, September 21, on the road against Louisiana-Lafayette.
