STILLWATER, Okla. (9/14/12) - For the second straight game, North Texas soccer battled back from a two-goal deficit against a ranked opponent, but No. 7 Oklahoma State squeaked past North Texas 3-2 on Friday, September 14.
"I couldn't be more proud of my team," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Oklahoma State is one of the best teams in the country, especially at home."
Coming off a frustrating 3-2 overtime loss against No. 16 Long Beach State on Sunday, September 9, North Texas fell into a quick hole against the Cowgirls. Kendra Boydstun tallied a goal in the third minute for the Cowgirls (8-1-0), while Madison Mercado added her fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.
A strong second-half start ignited a Mean Green rally, fueled by junior defender Kelsey Hodges' sixth goal of the season in the 47th minute. The Denton, Texas native is just three goals away from tying her career-high of nine goals, which was set in her freshman season in 2010.
Freshman forward Amber Haggerty tied the game at 2-2 in the 50th minute on North Texas' second unassisted goal of the game to push the momentum to the Mean Green.
The Mean Green (5-2-1) withstood a furious Cowgirls rally for the next few minutes after Haggerty's goal, including two saves by North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine and an Oklahoma State shot that rung off the post.
North Texas had an opportunity in the 87th minute to take the lead, but Oklahoma State goalkeeper Adrianna Franch made her second save of the game on North Texas senior forward Michelle Young to keep the game tied.
Just over a minute later, Allie Stephenson deposited her second goal of the season to give the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
"We were less than three minutes away from taking the game into OT," said Hedlund. "From a national perspective, people are starting to take notice of us and I hope with our results of late, we at least receive votes for the top 25."
The Mean Green picks up a road loss for the first time all season, while losing for the first time in three attempts against Oklahoma State. The heartbreaking loss against the Cowgirls follows the narrow defeat to No. 16 Long Beach State on Sunday.
The Mean Green welcomes in the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday, September 16, for the final non-conference game of the 2012 regular season.
