FORT WORTH -- The North Texas soccer team was left with a bitter taste in their mouths after last year's 1-0 loss to TCU in Denton. The Mean Green came away the victors this time with a late goal by Karla Pineda in the 86th minute that lifted North Texas to a 1-0 victory against the Horned Frogs on Sunday night in Fort Worth.

"It seemed like a track meet with all the speed out on the field tonight," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Both teams just did not want to give in but in the end Karla worked her magic and scored an amazing goal for the win."

The game was physical right from the start. The first half featured 17 combined fouls and four yellow cards. The Mean Green finished the game with 16 fouls, tying a season high.

The Mean Green did not have many scoring opportunities. In the 17th minute, Pineda took a free kick outside of the 18-yard box and forced the TCU goalkeeper to punch the shot over the crossbar.

In the second half, Rachel Holden slipped a pass up the middle to Taylor Torres inside the box, but the freshman forward hit it just wide.

A TCU hand ball just outside the box on the left side set up the Mean Green goal. Pineda, the team's set piece specialist, curled the ball into the right side netting. It was her fourth goal of the year.

North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine was busy all night. She made four saves in the first half and recorded just one in the second but came out numerous times to punch out crosses.
