DENTON -- The Mean Green soccer found a recipe for success this weekend. For the second straight game, North Texas scored two first-half goals and then sealed the win with a third score in the second period, en route to a 3-0 victory against Houston on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

The Mean Green won both its games this weekend in shutout fashion to improve to 5-1 this season and 1-1 at home. North Texas won both games with dominating performances by the offense and defense.

"Houston is a much improved team from a year ago especially with the speed they have added," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "It was essential for us as a team to start fast, get the offense going with a couple of goals and then try to close Houston out in the second half. That last goal between Karla and Rachel was first class and well executed and gave us the cushion we really needed."

Taylor Torres was involved in both of the Mean Green's first-half goals. The freshman provided a boost of speed and energy on a hot, humid afternoon when she subbed into the game in the 20th minute. Two minutes later, Anna Flobeck unselfishly passed the ball back to her off a corner kick. Torres hit it lefty to the upper left-hand corner of the goal unreachable by the UH goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, Torres lifted a pass from the left side of the field to Rachel Holden from 20 yards out. The junior forward one-touched the ball into the lower-right hand corner of the net for the second goal of the game.

Holden and Karla Pineda teamed up for the third goal in the 56th minute. Pineda took control of the ball in the right-hand corner of the field and put in a curving cross to Holden who headed home the final goal of the day.

Jackie Kerestine did not make a save until the 64th minute but it was a great one. Claire Salazar slid past the Mean Green defense and found herself one-on-one with the North Texas goalkeeper. Kerestine came out to make a diving stop on the shot. The save was also Kerestine's 300th career save.
