High-Powered Offense Fuels Soccer To Victory
Mean Green Improves to 4-0 With Win
DENTON - The North Texas soccer team came out shooting, and the result was a 3-1 victory for the Mean Green against Abilene Christian on Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
"It felt good to finally get our offense going tonight, especially in front of our fans against a very hard-working ACU team," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We have another tough one against Vanderbilt on Sunday but it feels good to start out the season 4-0."
The Mean Green came out aggressive, posting six shots on goal in the opening six minutes of play. North Texas did not stop shooting; finishing with season highs in shots (32) and shots on goal (15).
The Mean Green practiced set plays all week, and coach Hedlund's No. 1 goal for the game was for his players to hit their spots on those free kicks. Freshman Chelsei Soto was right where she was supposed to be on a Mean Green free kick in the first half.
Jackie Moreau's dangerous free kick into the box at the 27-minute mark forced goalkeeper Sydney Newton to make a play on the ball. Her punched ball bounced off the post and fell at Soto's feet. The freshman defender's high volley went into the back of the net from close range for her first goal of her career.
"It's very exciting to make the first freshman goal of the year for my team," said Soto. "I think we played well, but we can play better."
The next two Mean Green goals were scored within a minute of each other. Marchelle Davis' shot in the 64th minute of play proved to be the gamewinner. The sophomore received a ball from Karla Pineda and hit a low ball from outside the penalty box that got past the diving keeper.
Pineda responded with a goal of her own from inside the box off another set play and another dangerous ball by Moreau.
North Texas remains undefeated at 4-0 but its shutout streak ended when ACU's Baylee Mitchell snuck a low shot under a diving Jackie Kerestine in the 72nd minute.
