Early Goals Lead Mean Green Soccer To Victory
North Texas Defeats Abilene Christian, 3-0
ABILENE - For the first time all season, the North Texas soccer team scored two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the game. The early goals took pressure off the defense and allowed the Mean Green to dictate the pace of the game, resulting in a 3-0 road win against Abilene Christian.
"All of us were simply not happy after the Kansas game," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We tweaked a few things going in but more importantly, the girls' energy level tonight was outstanding. I was really proud of everyone's performance."
Senior midfielder Karla Pineda was involved in both of the early goals. She converted a penalty kick in the 12th minute after Rachel Holden was fouled by hard by the ACU goalkeeper. Pineda calmly made her first PK of the season and the fourth of her career.
In the 18th minute, Pineda set up Molly Grisham off a set piece. Grisham headed in her first goal of the season. The Mean Green controlled the first half, outshooting the Wildcats, 12-2.
The Mean Green defense allowed just three shots on goal by the opposition.
Holden sealed the win by cleaning up a loose ball inside the six-yard box and firing the ball into the back of the net.

North Texas is back in action on Sunday when it returns home to face Houston at 1 p.m. in the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
