HUNTSVILLE, Texas- North Texas (4-1) dropped a 1-0 double-overtime decision against Sam Houston State (1-4) at Prittchett Field.
The teams battled through heavy rain and sloppy field conditions that saw 104 minutes pass before the first goal of the game. Heavy rains in the Huntsville area drenched the players and the field right around game time. Players had a difficult time moving the ball on the damp pitch, and players splashed through standing water on the field during much of the first half.
Ellen Scarfone led the offensive attack for North Texas with six shots, North Texas out-shot Sam Houston State by a margin of 23 to 11. The Mean Green had all six of the game’s corner kicks. Kirby Zak scored the game winning goal for Sam Houston State with 5:21 remaining in the second overtime. Tricia Mallory had the assist on the play.
Haley Newsom got the start in net and made 9 saves, which is a season-high for North Texas. North Texas returns to the Mean Green Soccer Complex on Sunday, September 5th as they host New Mexico, who is receiving votes in the most recent NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, at 1 p.m.
