Kansas Scores Late To Defeat North Texas Soccer, 2-1
Jayhawks Ruin Mean Green's Home Opener
DENTON -- Junior forward Rachel Holden gave the Mean Green some momentum when she beat her defender and then the goalie to tie the game, 1-1, against Kansas early in the second half. The Jayhawks swung the pendulum back their way with a late goal that proved to be the gamewinner as Kansas left Texas with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
"I was really proud of the way we came out in the second half which got us the tying goal," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Unfortunately, we had a miss clear on the late goal and could not get the equalizer to extend the game into overtime. We will regroup, learn from our mistakes and focus on all the positives that came from our play in the second half."
Lois Heuchan's flicked header from a throw-in bounced once in the penalty box before Anna Courtney, set up far post, volleyed the ball into the back of the net for the eventual Kansas gamewinner. The Jayhawks held the Mean Green offense to just two shots the final 14 minutes.
The Jayhawks controlled possession for the early part of the game, outshooting the Mean Green 7-1 in the first 15 minutes of the game. Heuchan, who dished out both of the Jayhawks' assists in the game, found the endline in the 35th minute and her cross inside the six-yard box was redirected into the goal by Liana Salazar.
At the start of the second half, Holden took a pass from Taylor Torres at midfield and found herself with just one defender in front of her. The forward beat the Kansas defender one-on-one and then slotted the ball past a diving goalkeeper from just inside the penalty box.
